Photovoltaic cells, or solar cells, convert light into electricity. Solar panels take the suns energy and convert solar power into electricity that you can use to run everything in your home. These systems, called renewable energy systems, can harness enough solar energy so that your reliance on the power company is severely limited.

Most homes that use solar energy panels use them on the ground, the walls, and roof. Many are still attached to the local utility company. A small percentage rely solely on photovoltaic cell power by itself.

There has been much research in the area of solar power, tapping geothermal heat inside the earth, harnessing the power of the tides as an energy sources and wind turbines, but scientists are going further into their imaginations to develop energy from sources never thought of before.
