Great video, I have solar panels set up on the balcony of my apartment, and they are there to offset some of the electric drain I do. My electric bill is a dream! I'm not quite selling back, but with it cancels out a good amount of what I did regularly. Once I buy a house I'm shooting for 100% off the grid.

Hey guy, this is a great video. You got very simple and useful setup. I was really encouraged by everyone's video (and yours) on how to generate sun/wind power. I recently bought a 120 watt Kyocera panel, a morningstar controller and 2 marine (not-so-deep cycle) batteries. They've been at use for three months now. Thanks for your video.

Only in a completly sealed enviourment. The ammount of hydrogen generated is very minute. Keep in mind that as the hydrogen generates, the water level decreases. I only have to refill the water level on my batteries about once every 3 years. Take it from me, I work in a Chemical plant, and these are things we need to know.

If the Hydrogen gas (lighter than air) from the battery recharging rises up the vent tube back into the dryer, and the dryer (point source of ignition)is turned "on", does an "Explosion" hazard exist ??? I'm not knocking your idea (I think it's great, I'm going to get one), I was just "lookin out" for ya, and possibly improving your already fantastic set up.

By: cobianemmanuel. on 23 Oct 08, 20:29:07
Wow! good job on those calculations. Here's something else you might be interested in calculating. Don't forget, you estimated on the high end (3,706 KWH) so there will be plenty of days when you don't consume that much energy. On those days you will actually be contributing excess electricity into your city's power grid. So on those months you'll actually receive a small refund check from your power company rather than a bill! That might bring those 7 years down to even less time.

My consumption runs ...
By: WoundedEgo. on 17 Oct 08, 19:27:05
My consumption runs from 1000 to 3000 KWH per month. The lowest was 1,147, the highest was 3,706. Electricity will rise 15% this year due to fuel prices. I think I pay 13 cents per KWH now. Solar cost $5 per KWH?. So I would pay 3,706 * $5 = $18,530 to provide 100% of my energy? I would recoup my investment in a system in about 7 years? And that from that time on, my electric costs would be zero, if I don't have to replace my panels? Does this make any economic sense?

By: jamescgale. on 18 Nov 08, 18:24:21
These panels are not DIY like some think. It's a very difficult process because the ones in these videos use plating which has a mix of several metals depending on the manufacture however the poors man Panel is done with tempered copper, but very weak. None the less it's free energy. I'd suggest considering a certifiied installer so you wont have problems with the HOA (solar companies do the fighting for you.) and you can get close to 60% of the cost rebated through federal and state programs.

By: magnafina. on 14 Nov 08, 20:22:53
Solder is correctly pronounced s?d'?r, however our narrorator is correct in assuming that regionally the spelling has now converted people to mispronouncing the word and that often makes the misprounciation show up in the dictionary after a few years. It appears to be common in britian/canada, and me being a "Stupid American", I tend to look these things up and trust Merriam Webster and Rogets in such matters.

Here is a way that a residential house could effectively store solar energy during the five hours of good sunshine, to last for the full twenty-four hours. Use a hydraulic elevator system lifting a very heavy weight, where the energy is stored by the gravity of the weight. When the sun goes down,or when more power is needed during the five hours of good sunshine, the very heavy weight movement is reversed and the hydraulics is used to generate power.

yes, two strings - one inverter. The key here is that the strings are the same number of panels to have the same voltage per string. The roof pitch is the same too, so this configuration gives a longer production day. I want to say Torque Drivers are for wimps, but I think that will sound funny!

I've had the Harbor Freight system 3 months now and use it to charge 3 cell phones, a shaver, a flashlight and to power a phone/ answering mach. I also have a 115 amphr deepcycle battery. So far it seems like I'm under utilizing the system. The charge controller cycles off and on all afternoon. The trick seems to be to eliminate the wall power adapters and to put things on solar. Try not to use an inverter but, buy a car chargers or make up a cord and plug it into the Harbor Freight panel.

One more thing. Some electronic devices will not work on a Modified Sine inverter. Also many are listed as 750 watt / 1500 watt as an example. The lower number is the one you want to use. The higher number is for load starting. Pure Sine is the safe choice. Walmart and Lowes carry Modified Sine inverters so if you want to test it out, do so with caution.

By: GREENPOWERSCIENCE. on 21 Sep 08, 18:43:06
THANK YOU:-) I would suggest a Pure Sine inverter that is 300-500 watts. If your monitor is a flat screen, that would make a big difference. Search Ebay for a "KILL O WATT" meter. Plug everything into the device and then into your outlet. This will tell you how many watts your system is running Be sure to crank everything up.

I just read that a guy in Africa found a new material that has made all the present solar panels obsolete. His material makes it possible to even run your home in the winter under cloud cover. A company in Germany is supposed to build them but as far as I found they are only going to be available commercially. It Figures. No one wants to help the home owner get away from high utility bills.

Do you always have to use sun light to charge a solar cell battery. Or is it possible to use laser light or even infared light as well. For places like a diver deep under water or in dark night like on a James bond spy movie were his watch needs charging at night don't think moon light will work so shining a laser on watch charge in five minutes. Also should panels be flat or a ball shape to capture all angles of sun light.(when driving in different direction of a car ride.More surface area.

I just had an idea. It says in the video that cooling down the solar panels helps improve the efficiency. So what about using heatsinks to keep them cool, since spraying them with water can cause damage from thermal shock. The heatsinks could take the heat away from the panels, improving their effeciency, and the heat directed into a tank for water storage. You can heat your water AND improve your solar energy output! I'm brilliant ^.^

Our office is powering by Whisper turbine Need to say: wind is difficult energy, even strong wind will not produce enough energy to supply ALL our demands, we USED TO have. The fact is that people now consume TOO MUCH energy. Example: Home windturbine will work all night at good wind to supply you with energy, that will be consumed by coffee machine, to boil and warm coffee for some hours! WE NEED TO SAVE ENERGY ALSO! Saving even 20%, we JUST now achieve the goal to have 20% gr. en. by 2020!

By: peptopro17. on 21 Aug 08, 22:30:06
6 kilowatts x 5 good hours of sun = 30 kilowatts a day. 365 days in a year x 30 killowatts = 10950 kw a year (assuming perfect sunlight). Most power companies charge on average about 16 cents a KW. 10950kw x .16 = $1752 saved per year. Most 200 watt panels are about 800 bucks each (including all accessories, cables, etc). He would have 30 of these. 30 x $800 = $160000. So he is saving $1752 a year, on a $160,000 investment. The old man will be dead in the 90+ years it takes to pay it all off.

By: folkstreamer. on 21 May 08, 19:46:16
Some power companies credit people for the electricity they generate and give them credit on the bill. Typically solar houses create more power on hot summer days when there is the most demand for power. Essentially the power company becomes the battery -- the solar home owner banks his power credits and uses them on days when he can not generate his own power. The problem is that most power companies do not encourage this because it doesn't make money for them.

Your wasting your time using Platinum in water. Since you like to waste stuff maybe you should use the platinum to make a new battery and store the electricity from Hydrogen not intended for HHO use cause only Hydrogen Refill Stations will be Commercialized & you need a pressure tank at about 55 psi output to the engine so you do not have to use gasoline as you were making things that burn-up fuel. Otherwise use the Hydrogen to create power in the car and run a electric car. GALILEO site - NG

You're right. I offer my apologies. Here is a bit of elementry science. Any time a coil is moved within a magnettic field, a current is produced. Move it away, and the current reverses. This is Faradays law, and the principle behind any electric motor, ac or dc. The current polarity moving back and forth is why we call it ac(alternating current). Dc, on the other hand, is produced in other ways like solar, electrochemical reactions, etc. to be continued.

By: dire67. on 02 Oct 08, 17:09:27
The drill was dc because it ran on batteries. Its motor is still an ac generator when used as you did. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. You are still doing great work. I, too, found the use of platinum unwise. Why spend so much money on a less effective material? You'd just be another auto manufacturer. lol Keep up the good work. If I had a camera I would post my own videos. Meanwhile, I'll make myself available for tossing ideas back and forth.

Dissociation by electrolysis gets more efficient the closer the plates are to each other. At 1/16" the rough voltage of 2.2-2.6v also contributes to the efficiency (too low and it shuts off, too high and it begins converting electricity to heat. Problem with having plates so close together is separation of gases becomes problematic.

so lets review. a 12v panel rated at 50w can produce a drain of about 4.16 amps. now if you are using an inverter to power 120v Ac you can only pull 1 10th or .416. its all relative. i hope i really understand what ive just typed. at least thats been my thinking all this time. if its not exactly right... i apologize for being an idiot in advance.

in order for electricity to travel greater distances without much loss, it is a practice to increase the voltage. panels 200 ft from house (i think its something like thatf.. dont promise. do a google on it) you might increase the systems voltage to 24v and install a proper inverter that can handle it.

By: AlienEnema. on 16 Nov 08, 01:19:32
panels, like batteries, produce differing voltages. the rule is that voltage (potential) wired in series, (neg open, pos-neg, pos open) produces voltage increase. such as 6v + 6v in series = 12 volts. if you have just created a 12v system from two 6v, you can then increase the amount of Amp hours available. you increase the capacity. you do this in whats called a parallel circuit by connecting pos+pos and neg+neg. so if you have a 12v system @ 50Ah + same = 12v @ 100Ah. You see?

Good video as usual. It should be known that it's not a good idea to pull deep cycle batteries down below 50% as this will dramatically shorten their lifespan. Also you shouldn't mix battery types or even the same type batteries with others of very different ages. The whole bank will only be as strong as the weakest one.

By: GREENPOWERSCIENCE. on 20 Oct 08, 22:54:54
When you have them at 13.5 v, remove the panel leads and see what the batteries are I would guess 12.5v is what they will be at. They should be around 12.5 with nothing attached. Most charger units will cut off before 14v to prevent overcharging. When your batteries are fully charged they will register 13.5-14v with the panels attached full sun and 12-12.7 when no panels or at night. How are they holding the load. Your system sounds normal. What you are seeing is full batteries + panel v.

Yes to the diode with a wind turbine. Ebay has some cheap ones. For the panels, most newer ones have a diode built in several places. Having been a physics lab teacher and demonstrating ITC at meeting I know that worry! Most PV panels produce for ordinary visible light so I would think it's "just" a question of getting enough intensity. Unless the panels themselves are the special feature (very high voltage?) it would seem to me that you just have to have a battery backup in case of no sun.

By: swahili77. on 22 Oct 08, 06:46:07
In most situations most energy is needed for "resistance and inefficiency" and it's not necessarily small. Elevators usually use counterweights (in best case another elevator going the other way) to decrease the force needed. Lifting weights is one way store energy. I would be interested in hearing a real life example that is economically competitive with Insulated water tank (for heat) or batteries for Electricity.

A google search of "elevator return energy", found that modern elevator systems in tall buildings do have special drive mechanisms that generates return energy when the elevator is going down. Thus, the complete needed technology for storing residential solar energy in a special heavy-weighted energy storage elevator is already available. The "overall energy" use for tall building elevators is very small ( just the cost of resistance and inefficiency ).

By: diamondsmajestic1. on 17 Oct 08, 02:54:14
This is a very good practical idea that could be implemented relatively simply an inexpensively. The energy from cheap solar thermal heaters could be harnessed to heat gases or liquids to actuate the hydraulic lift mechanism as well solar electrical power or even manual power as an emergency back up system, just like our former generations of lighthouse keepers used pulley systems to lift weights each day to rotate huge mechanical systems of lenses and mirrors each night as navigation beacons.
In theory that ...
By: swahili77. on 15 Oct 08, 21:07:27
In theory that would be possible but I doubt if it is very cost effective. I would think storage in insulated water tanks would be much cheaper. That principle is used by some hydro electric plants that pump water UP to the reservoirs when there is excess electricity available.

By: trader0108. on 15 Oct 08, 18:12:55
